Permanent Record Podcast

Brian and Sarah are your hosts for this look back at albums from the New Wave and Classic Rock genres-- albums which have earned a permanent spot in their record collection. The hosts start the discussion with a history of the album, followed by their personal history with it. Over the course of two episodes, they do a track-by-track review of the album and the videos that accompany the singles. They conclude by each giving the album a final review and rating of zero to five record adapters. Join Brian and Sarah in this fun look back at the hits-- along with some misses-- of the 70s and 80s!

Episode 153: Thompson Twins - Quick Step & Side Kick (1983) Part 2

After a break to release an "emergency episode" about the new Depeche Mode single, "Ghosts Again,"  Brian and Sarah are ready to resume their album discussion of Quick Step & Side Kick, a.k.a. Side Kicks, the 1983 release by the Thompson Twins.

Our hosts are continuing down Side One of the US track listing, and in this episode they find there are two singles to discuss, although one of them wasn't released in the US. They also find an album track that they both feel should have been released as a single all over the world!

A recurring theme in this album discussion is "Thompson Twins songs that sound like other songs," and two of the three songs in this episode fall in that category. Both Brian and Sarah are somewhat puzzled by a couple of the claims, but they do agree on one song that definitely sounds similar to the Thompson Twins.

Since there are two singles, that means there are also two videos. One of them left a particularly strong impression on Brian and his friends in the 80s, resulting in a rather silly claim occasionally made by both Brian and Sarah even to this day. The other video raised a lot of questions for Sarah and made Brian feel a little queasy at one point. And although Sarah had very little personal history to share about this album in the previous episode, she does reveal some personal history about one of the songs in this episode.

In this episode you'll not only hear reviews, chart history and thoughts on the songs, but you'll also hear confusion about modern art, questions about musical instruments, and even talk of flowering plants!

Songs discussed in this episode:
Lies
We Are Detective
Love Lies Bleeding
