Permanent Record Podcast

Brian and Sarah are your hosts for this look back at albums from the New Wave and Classic Rock genres-- albums which have earned a permanent spot in their record collection. The hosts start the discussion with a history of the album, followed by their personal history with it. Over the course of two episodes, they do a track-by-track review of the album and the videos that accompany the singles. They conclude by each giving the album a final review and rating of zero to five record adapters. Join Brian and Sarah in this fun look back at the hits-- along with some misses-- of the 70s and 80s!

Episode 91: The Cult - Sonic Temple (1989)

September Sans Sarah rolls on as longtime friend of the show Colby Zell returns to join Brian for a discussion on The Cult's 1989 hard-rocking watershed moment: "Sonic Temple."

The two cover some facts, figures, and history of the album, talking about where the band was coming from in 1989 and their decision to work with producer Bob Rock.

They also cover their own personal histories with the record, histories that overlap quite a bit as they tell the story of a poor Pontiac Sunbird with a penchant for bursting into flames and a chance encounter with a university Dean of Housing.

And then, before moving on to four personally-curated tracks for further discussion, the old chums cover some reviews of the album to get a sense of what the critics thought of this tasty slice of musical goodness.

Finally, Brian and Colby go into further detail on the following songs/videos:

New York City (featuring Iggy Pop!)
Sun King
Edie (Ciao Baby)
Fire Woman

Just a note: Any time Brian uses the word "muddled" in this episode, he actually means "muddy."  Not sure what was up with his vocabulary....
