Permanent Record Podcast

Brian and Sarah are your hosts for this look back at albums from the New Wave and Classic Rock genres-- albums which have earned a permanent spot in their record collection. The hosts start the discussion with a history of the album, followed by their personal history with it. Over the course of two episodes, they do a track-by-track review of the album and the videos that accompany the singles. They conclude by each giving the album a final review and rating of zero to five record adapters. Join Brian and Sarah in this fun look back at the hits-- along with some misses-- of the 70s and 80s!

Episode 83: The Cure - Disintegration (1989) Part 4

The month of May is coming to an end, and so is Brian and Sarah’s in-depth look at The Cure’s 1989 album, Disintegration. But before they begin their discussion of the last four songs, they have some other news and information to talk about. First, friend of the show Alan Hogg shared a review of the first Disintegration 30th anniversary concert in Sydney, and Brian reads some excerpts of that review. Then, the hosts turn their attention to an unfortunate time period in the history of The Cure, when co-founder Lol Tolhurst sued the band after being kicked out right after the recording of this album.

Part 3 - Track by Track, continued

After that, it’s time for Brian and Sarah to pick up where they left off, starting with song two of Side Two. There are no more singles or videos, but our hosts find no lack of things to discuss as they continue to traverse the sonic landscape of the album’s second side. As with the previous three episodes, the topics of instrumentation, lyrics, and possible song meanings find their way into the conversation. Additionally, quotes and memories from both Robert Smith and Roger O’Donnell help bring some color and authenticity (well, the authenticity is highly suspect, in the case of Mr. Smith!) to the discussion.

Part 4 - Final Review and Rating

Since every episode for this album has started off with various tidbits of Cure news and history, there is no Extra Credit section this time. And so, after many hours of discussion and analysis, it comes down to the final reviews and ratings from each of the hosts. It’s probably not too difficult to guess how many record adapters Disintegration gets from both Brian and Sarah. But it may be a surprise to hear what else they both have to say about their ratings.
